Forestry

Seeds germinate in the nursery. After 18 months the seedlings are planted in the open and cared for during the first three years. Within 12 years they are rather large and well on their way to becoming seed bearing themselves in their 15th year.

The mainstay tree is the true mahogany classified in the American genus Swietenia and the African genus Khaya. Trees are planted close together for survival and ease of maintenance reasons, however, after the trees are large enough to produce shade for other seedlings the thinning process begins each year thereafter. It is then that as many as 175 different varieties of endemic trees and plants are introduced into the forest to create a truly diversified forest.
